What on earth does "catching feelings" mean? People above the age 18 surely figured out how emotions work and aren't an "infection" you catch, right?

I have just read a question here that said "is he catching feelings or just making conversation", and I am a bit confused. Do some people really not pay enough attention to themselves that they know how emotional responses work? Because they should. It helps. Especially so that they wouldn't make weird statements like "that guy caught feelings from me because we have been having sex, although that is still a better option than chlamydia or genital herpes".

How did someone even come up with this term? That is not how emotions work. What the hell.

It's kind of hard to explain. Sometimes being in love feels like a disease. It hurts you and it makes you weak and vulnerable. I have never used the term, but I understand the reason why some people use it...
