Is there a difference between the terms "womanizer" and "ladies man"?

The womanizer and the ladies' man are ostensibly the same stereotype (sexually precocious, charming, and unable to tame with a conventional relationship). But the essential difference is how they are perceived. Obviously, the debonair ladies' man is a more positive spin ("god's gift to women"), and the womanizer is framed as an unsympathetic, sometimes pervert.

I'd think that womanizer has more of a negative connotation and implies that he's decietful/manipulative.

Ladies man is more positive just really popular with the ladies and is highly desired without having to decieve people.

I don't know that's just the way I look at it though, maybe I'm wrong :/

- A womanizer is someone who treats women like meat. He thinks that women are only useful as something to insert your penis into for pleasure, like Tommy in Goodfellas: "I wanna bang this broad!". They usually have to make the effort and pick up on women and just happen to be successful. A womanizer may have a steady girlfriend but will cheat on her. Guaranteed.

- A ladies man: WOMEN pick up on HIM (think James Bond, Captain Kirk, or Lt. William T Riker). A ladies' man respects women. And the women who pick up on him don't want a commitment any more than he does. She may be divorced and getting big bucks in alimony so she knows she will lose that if she remarries, so she doesn't want to get married, or she might have never been married but if she's under 30 she knows she has plenty of time. The women who pick up on a ladies' man is thinking (or maybe even SAYING) "I don't want any of this lovey dovey bullshit, I just want tubesteak smothered in underwear".
