Why do guys put their hands in their pants while they are sleeping?

I was hanging out at my friends house and he fell asleep on the couch. I was sitting next to him, so I tried to get up slowly and quietly without waking him up. As I moved, so did he. He shoved his hand into pants. I'm not talking about pockets, I'm talking about pants and underwear too. So my question, why do guys do that? Is it because they're dreaming or do they get cold?

It calms me and also helps me fall into peaceful sleep. I've been doing that since I can remember even when I'm sleeping on the couch I'll be woken up by my sister hitting my hand and one day my hand will come out with my dick, I always warn her.

It's weird... sometimes if I'm sleeping on my back I'm most comfortable if I'm holding my junk. I don't know why this is.
