Why would a guy lie about not liking a girl he actually likes?

Okay. So I've been talking to this guy for about 4 months now and we flirt ALL THE TIME. All my friends and my family thinks he likes me. I've also been having trouble with my ex who is sorta a stalker and won't leave me alone, and he is always been protective, even almost ripping my phone out of my hand to answer his call for me and issuing a lot of threats if he doesn't leave me alone. So last night, the same old calls came repeatedly and I finally answered trying to get my ex to leave me alone while I was hanging out with the guy I like. My ex overheard him on the phone and asked if he was my boyfriend and I screamed that he wasn't. The guy looked down and didn't talk to me for almost 30 minutes after that. Later, I asked if he likes me, and he said no. If he does like me, then why would he lie about it?

He might have just felt awkward or thought you were mad, cus you sorta sounded like you were super upset. Its sort of like when tou go to your friends house and they start arguing with their siblings or parents, its just really awkward.
