try adding the conversation of him saying " I'm trying to work things out with my baby mama, I really want to be friends though, I do miss you and if you can't accept it and hangout and have fun that would be great"

I believe it means he doesn't want to be with you right then and there. I think It would give you more heartbreak trying to revisit and talk to him about it, if you like him. Apparently you do if a conversation formed around that as the topic. I'm very sorry but the meaning is quite literal.
