They see us as the damsel in distress that needs to be saved by a white knight.
Most guys are brought up to be tough, self sufficient problem solvers.. who are there to securely protect the woman he ends up being with. What's wrong with that?
Girls do take care of guys too, in the sense of attending to them when they are sick or in need... but generally many guys are inhibited in expressing their feelings anyway and refuse help in the emotional department. They are the "fix problems, start action and fight for the prize" rather than the "let's talk about our feelings" as that strips away their part to growing up as a man.
They don't want to be seen as the "weak" one that required no effort to attain the woman he wants. They want to win you over by being your personal hero.

I am obviously not a guy but I think if a guy cares about a girl he will want to take care of her (not raise her or baby her). However, the girl should be able to take care of herself and the guy is just a bonus, you know? You don't NEED him to do it but it certainly is nice.
For a long time it has been (still is) socially accepted that men need to be the bread winners of a family, but of course this is changing with the times. A more scientific answer starts delving into evolution, which you may or not believe (I do, to a degree)
In evolutionary terms, animals compete for mates. Males typically compete with other males because females are very "selective." This is because females have a higher reproductive cost (i. e. Pregnancy). So males must make themselves more attractive to the female, or else the female may dump them for another, better mate. Carrying this over to human society, it's easy to connect the dots.
Guys do like to be taken care of themselves or there wouldn't be woman weeping over the bad boy who she helped pay off his loans and supported him when he went to jail. I know a lot of woman who date complete losers who so drugs or are chronic alchys in the hope of changing them

I wouldn't really want to he taken care of but I want to take care of someone. It's an instinct.
It isn't about wanting to not be seen as weak, or to win you or someone over by being a hero. It's about choosing someone to love and take care of and making that the meaning of your life.
It's a love language.Guys will not tell you I want a girl to take care of me due to the societal obligation bestowed upon us to always be manly, "macho" and not care about anything. We take care of girls because we've been biologically placed as the providers and protectors. But of course, it's all getting ruined because gender roles are changing. I honestly feel sorry for the current generation growing up.
It makes them feel like providers/protectors, which are classically masculine traits. Traits that are desirable so they guy tries to be desirable.
Also, it just makes us feel wanted and needed.it's a natural thing for most guys to want to protect! :-D
I'd love to be taken care of and protected, actually.
Taken care of themselves? Can you please elaborate more on that?
