What does it mean when a guy makes eye contact but never smiles?

So here's the story:

I dropped off my bags at school and walked out of my maths classroom onto the corridor. I walked slowly down the corridor to see his friend who is super big and him walking slightly behind but next to him. I pretend to not see him by looking at the floor whilst walking. I can see out of the corner of my eye that he has seen me... and as soon as this happens, he moves behind his friend and almost hides. He has his jacket zipped all the way up to his nose and as i walk past, we make eye contact which lasts about 2 seconds before i look down and walk off without looking behind me. He looked scared, his eyes were wide and half his face was covered. We've made eye contact on multiple occasions and he never smiles, just a blank face, staring back at me. He sometimes looks away quickly, but thats only if i've caught him. I'm so confused. He's shown other signs of liking me before but i just want to know what this would mean if it was a guy who liked you? Why wouldn't he smile if he liked me? Does he hate me?

ooo he's one of those. they're so interesting.
no not at all, he could very well like you, but be incredibly subtle about it.
why don't u go over and say hi one day? or just wave at him?
try to slowly see what's going on behind them wide eyes.

i think he likes you definitely. go talk to him. like ask him for help with homework or studying
