Why would a guy call himself an idiot?

I'm talking to the guy I've been seeing for a little while and all of a sudden he says " remember when I did and that. I'm such an idiot"
So I corrected him and told him that he's very smart. Was he looking for a compliment or does he have a low self-esteem?

he's not looking for attention or anything. I think you're making that statement more of a big deal than it is. We all do dumb things and sometimes ill says im such an idiot. I dont actually think im an idiot though and neither does he.

I think you are overthinking about this. He called himself an idiot because he did something idiotic, only for that instance that's all. It doesn't mean he is an idiot.
