Why Does my Boyfriend's Best friend call me a nickname?

So my boyfriend and his best bud and I have hung out together many times and at first I didn't like the best friend, but he eventually grew on me and we became friends, too. However, from day 1 when I first met his best friend, he always called me a nickname. My name is Carolina (and that's what everyone calls me) but he always called me "carol", which is odd because nobody has ever called me that. I've never heard him call any other girls by a nickname, so I don't understand why he always calls me "carol" instead of my real name. Nobody has ever called me carol. Why would he do this?

There is this guy at my job name "Coleman." But I call him "Cole" even though he never told me to and I never really heard anyone else call him that. Its because when I first met him, I wasn't really acquainted with him and he had a weird name in my opinion. It was too long. So I shortened it and just started calling him Cole. He didn't mind and now that's what I always call him despite that nobody else does it. Its not that I like him or am particualry fond of him, its just that its much more casual than calling him a stuffy name like Coleman and he doesn't seem to mind so... maybe the best friend is like me.
