Why does he act so weird when I compliment him?

I'm confused why some guys react so weird to compliments. The guy I have been seeing for a while either ignores my compliments or changes the subject. For example, I told him the other day that it makes me so happy to see him and he said nothing at all.
Once he wrote me a sweet letter telling me how he feels and when I tried to compliment him back, he said that I don't need to say anything. He just wanted me to know how he feels.
Why is he like this? Guys, please help me figure him out!

Guys don't usually get compliments, or I guess I should say they don't as much as women. If you're complimenting him and he suddenly changes the subject or gets nervous, it means you struck a nerve in a good way.

Well girls get compliments constantly usually but for a guy to get one, it tends to make us feel awkward. Even when it's coming from someone that they know, it comes off as a shock and makes us shy.
