If he's so eager to talk why doesn't he initiate?

I am unsure if he's interested romantically - but he is at least VERY enthusiastic for a conversation in text, good enough for now. If I text him in the evening we text and joke around through the night. He asks me questions about me often. This is all coming from a introverted guy who likes his alone time.

But while he used to do lots of the initiating before - now we can go days and he won't initiate and eventually I give in and text him - again he's always eager to talk. So whats the deal? If he likes talking why not start talking to me himself? Am I missing something?

I'm always afraid of being too clingy too but then sometimes he initiates and I'm all relieved. Do you guys hangout one on one ever at school or whatever?

No we went to the same school and we've both graduated already, but we never met while at school he just followed me on social media and then slowly we started talking more and more.
Usually he was always the one to initiate even when he didn't know me well, now that I have picked up some of the initiating it seems like he's stopped? Like we can go a week or so and he still doesn't message me first. But he's happy to talk when I do it.

Actually wait how do we know he's just not interested? Or what if he only likes talking in the moment cos he has nothing better to do - or what if he likes me as a friend but not more?

Asking him out directly will put it all to rest. Don’t use vague words like soon or sometime. Get a specific date. Throw a date out there. If he has plans or whatever ask “ok what date is good for you?” If he still hem haws tell him forget it and move on
