Yes, this is a thing. What dictates it is that in many couples, man and woman don't like to compete in areas but rather wants to corner different "tasks" and qualities other than their partner. Some very handsome men want to be the hot one where she doesn't outshine him. The opposite, gorgeous women with average looking men is also common by that same token.
Two people who are in the range of average looking typically don't care but somebody who's a little above average hot and is used to that attention feel anxious about getting involved with someone that's even hotter still. They feel they might be considered plain in comparison all of a sudden.
I think the whole thing's stupid, as anxieties often are, but it is what it is.
Usually, a guy chooses a girl because she is attractive TO HIM. But yes, I've seen couples where one is more attractive than the other, but that is my subjective judgment. There are other ways to attract a guy than physical looks. Flattery goes a long way. You'd be surprised at how this works on a guy.
Hot guys bang the hottest girls they can, and when things are slow, many of them will move down the scale as necessary to get laid, but they keep looking for willing hot girls. Relatively few get into relationships, and in the rare instances that they do, they tend to only go for the hottest girls - and they are often unfaithful regardless.
The reality is that guys want to have sex with lots of women, and hot guys (unlike every other guy) have TONS of opportunity to have casual sex, because nearly all women are willing to have sex with them - including casual sex - so the guys have no real need to be in a relationship. Eventually they'll want a relationship for emotional support, but once they have it, their sex drive and their opportunities don't wane, so eventually, most will start banging other women again. Sure, there are some rare exceptions to this, hot + faithful is an incredibly rare combo.
So - if you get with a hot guy, I hope you are okay with sharing him.
I think if a hot guy has the option to sleep with an average girl or a hot girl and both girls are just as willing/eager then most will choose the hot girl. However if the average girl is more eager to fuck/ will put out more easily or if there are no hot girls around willing to sleep with him I think most hot guys are willing to sleep with an average girl, they just won't commit to her.
Or to put it in a different perspective I think average looking girls have significantly high odds of being able to hookup with a conventionally hot guy than an average looking guy does of being able to hookup with a conventionally hot girl.
On average overly hot guys by & large go for easy/sluts regardless if they're "hot" or not. It's a boost to their ego. And you'd just as often find a slut/promiscuous women who are less attractive as you would attractive.
I'm naturally attractive & had many "hot guys" try to get with me. Too bad for them I've standards. And some their personality is often so foul (arrogant, ignorant, rude, conceited, etc.) I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole if they were the last men on earth.

Mostly average women.
We shave statistics for this stuff. Average women and attractive men have the most sex. The reason given is that attractive women become more discerning and more demanding. But average girls are very willing when it comes to attractive guys. So it’s attractive women choosing not to get with the attractive guys that results in the highest rates of sex coming from a small number of attractive guys and average women (technically slightly overweight women were the highest rates among women).
I agree with this. I would rather lock in with a 8/10 and get my sexual boxes ticked more frequently than put up with a 10/10 who is less willing to please. Sounds terrible but it has never failed me yet.
That’s like saying post something unattractive. I could post anything: a brick, a cabbage, a desk.
My point being that attractive is a more specific thing that could be shown in pictures. “Average” is just everywhere. Look around at your average twenty something girls.
folks like to over blow it that guys always go for women just as attractive as they are. however from what I've seen, most couples usually have one person that is noticeably more attractive than the other. Most of the hot guys I've seen date girls that are average anywhere from 5/10-8/10. but I've also seen them date women as low as 4/10. Its rare and uncommon but it still happens. I think if you're at least an average looking girl, you should have a chance of bagging a hot guy.
In my country I see cute girls with guys like rappers or not so handsome guys that make you wonder what kind of sorcery is that haha, I'll say anybody can date whoever he or she wants, the cute people dating not so handsome people might be a bit lazy in a relation and wants to be adored maybe.
You got to keep in mind it's nature at work here, and water always seek it's own level the rate case of an handsome guy hooking up with a less attractive female shows either a man in love or little confidence I'n himself, either way what does it matter all that does is that they truly love each other, love try it warning you will be addicted to it
What I've seen... more than less attractive. They go for the one who are "balanced" they dont' have to be as hot as them, yet they give them sex and probably have lower standards. Maybe Im very biased, yet the majority of whom socially are considered, hot guys don't cultivate as much their personality. So a beautiful and intelligent woman probably will "pass" on them.

As attractiveness and its social implications is an actual field of study, I read that attractive men tend to get a lot of attention from women all around, but only the women he deems less attractive than what he wants actually pursue him, show interest, and makes it easy for him. And so some of them settle, because attractive women are either passive, scared to do anything, or high maintenance ergo, not worth it.
If its just casual guys are willing to date less attractive, as it takes a lot of effort for guys, most guys would take any opportunity with someone with lower attractiveness. How low depends on the guy.
However for long term relationship its opposite generally guys will try with most attractive they can find.
People go after whoever they find attractive even if there are more attractive people out there. Just because you're attractive yourself doesn't mean you'll only go for 10/10's.
Any man who has been on this earth for any amount of time knows that super-hot women tend to be disasters as human beings. Seriously, hot women are nice to look at and have on your arm at an event, but not much else.
The really hot women I have known are awful in bed, have little to no personality, are very high maintenance, and are focused on just being beautiful. There is no substance to keep a man.

Sometimes they will - the less than '10's put out more, try harder. They have to in order to keep the hot guy. The disney-princess of a girl is generally just a giant PITA.
Also, really hot guys is subjective too. Certain types of women would find me irresistible, and I would tend to go for that demographic regardless of how hot they are.
