My friend thinks something is going on with my male coworker and myself... can’t males and females just be friends?

Ok so my friend swears up and down that there is something between my male coworker and I. He and I have worked together a few years ago at one branch of our company. We had a similar work ethic, we were both nice to each other. When I went to a different branch we would keep in touch on the phone and chat for hours, if I was working near his location or visa versa we would meet up for lunch and we would hug when we saw each other and before we left. We were cool like that. And we’ve kept up this friendship over the last how many years. All of a sudden he’s been verbal about wishing we could work together or go to training sessions together... I take it as nothing. I assume my friend is getting the wrong idea because we are always talking to each other... but its mainly about work. I also chalk it up to he's a few years younger than me and maybe he just values my knowledge of the company, how to ace interviews and who to network with versus who to not bother with all together...

So you tell me... can’t men and women just be friends? Or does one person end up having an attraction to the other?
