Why is he pretending to be my friend?

I'm great friends with this one guy for about a few months. I get mixed emotions from him, one day I get the feeling he doesn't like me (use to be rude to me) then the next he does (cause he always coming up to me). I overheard him say he doesn't really like me as a person and even though I heard him say that, he's still trying to be my friend. I'm not holding a gun to his head or giving him anything so why pretend to be my friend?
