Is he trying to be my friend?

So this guy I know, texts me sometimes. Mostly randomly, like he views my story then comments. He usually asks me things or says he likes the same song as me etc. I was wondering is he trying to be my friend? Or maybe he’s just randomly texting because he’s bored? I know him from high school. He seemed shy, he didn’t talk much. We didn’t talk in high school but after we graduated that’s when he started texting randomly.
Is he trying to be my friend?
