From the way you describe it he was excited to get laid and either did and is on to the next or didn't and gave up waiting/hoping.

OK, so my answer kinda doesn't change. Best I can think to do is offer reasons I've done something similar.
First and most common is that the conversations became too dependant on me to push. Closed answers and lack of follow-ups made it harder and harder to find reasons to say hi.
Second, for some reason responses come in pairs when I play on sites like that. I'll close the door on one when I know I'm more interested in another.

It kinda boils to the same, he lost interest for one reason or another. If he isn't completely ghosting you you can try just asking 'Hey, what happened?'
