We like each other but is it a red flag that I'm the one to message him first most of the time?

It's a rare occasion for him to message me first, we recently confessed and I'm glad he likes me back but the fact he doesn't message me first a lot makes me wonder if he's just shy or nervous or if he just doesn't realise he should.. I've asked him about it before and he understood so he tried but it kinda died out to it being me most of the time again.

Well it sounds as though you’re too forward with your energy and attention. Clearly he’s able to sense that he doesn’t have to text you, because you’ll do it anyway. That’s me and the boyfriend, except in other partnership I’m the receiver of his attention, because I sit back and let him do it. Every now and then I will text first, but it’s mostly him doing it. Once he said “so you won’t text if I don’t?” and just as your boyfriend I tried it, but it went back to him texting first.
Sit back and let him chase you, because that’s what he wants to do, but you won’t let him do that. Good luck.

And then when he still doesn’t text first, it’s means he’s not interested because it’s not in the nature of guys to not chase the girl they are interested in/love. And do you even want someone who has such a passive energy when it comes to dating? The answer is NO. Trust me it will be a struggle with him constantly. He’s doing you a favour.
