Are guys protective over girls that they don't care about?

So there is a guy who I'm friends with who is pretty protective over me, if anyone says anything even slightly mean he takes my side, tells them to piss off, I've never really experienced it before, so I don't know if it's just what nice guys do, or if there are some feelings attached..

HOW YOU singularly, manage YOUR 'franchise' determines the brand loyalty of YOUR patronage---

NEVER forget that. If in daily interaction, YOU do THAT... worthy of respect, THEN any sane male
would offer the use of WHATEVER force the circumstances required, to 'protect' the continuation YOUR 'franchise'. THAT is... "brand loyalty" and any female would do well to foster such fierce 'chivalry'.

No matter if he has feelings for you or not, if he do that, he really cares about you... that's means you guys are pretty close. (I used to have a friend like that. If someone was really mean to me, he would shut them down because I was too shy and kind)

I said slightly mean, so it's not like I'm being attacked by mean people, he just acts defencive and has a go at them, I don't ask him to, it has been over things as pathetic as what I'm having for lunch, someone said it looked like shit, he was the one that got stuck into them, I was fine with what they said, told them they didn't have to eat it so it was all good,
