We're very territorial over our women. Typically, we don't like to share. Having a guy look at our gf/wife/etc is usually enough (in itself) to put our hair on end. I've never really paid much attention to it, it's just a natural behavior. I don't like guys checking out my previous girlfriends.. And there's a few of those girls who I'm still protective over to this day, I just don't act on those feelings (e.g. I don't show them that I'm protective over them)..
I suppose that natural behavior is just something that I've noticed to help me avoid bullsh*t I don't wanna deal with. I mean.. Everytime I "stare down" some guy for checking out my girlfriend, he usually gets the hint that I'm aggressive.. at which point he'll walk away.. Same with other areas, like if someone is trying to stand too close to my car.. A mere look of "protection" makes them back up and leave my car alone.

Protective or possessive? It goes back to root of our species. Men have usually been the protector of the dwelling. Yes, many women will call me a sexist for this, but I can live with it. Like many species on this planet, the male is usually the fighter and protector (yet a mother protecting her young is still the most dangerous creature on the planet). If a guy is protective of you and tries to keep you from harm, this is usually a good thing.
If he is the possessive type, this is not so good. I hear and read too often of guys who are obsessed with possessing a girl If she even looks at another guy, he loses it. You see and hear stories of guys who have beaten or killed their wives / girlfriends because they were the over possessive type. This type of guy is to be avoided.
I like a guy to be protective towards me because that shows that he cares (whether it is as a friend or girlfriend) and it also tells me that he respects women & isn't the type to treat women like sh*t. Now the problem arises when they become TOO over protective lol
That' attractive to women. I want to know that my guy can defend me should something go wrong. -shrugs-
Territory. Thank-god they don't "spray" to tell others that we're "theirs" lol

Two reasons: 1: We defend not just our partners, but every female with our lives. In other words we have a natural sense to protect her from any danger whatsoever, let it be physically or mentally. And we will ensure her safety no matter the cost.
2: When it is our partner, we take all precautions to protect her. If it's a shady part of town you're walking through, we hold her so we can block a bullet or knife slash. If it's another guy, he could be a serial killer, or maybe a porn director looking for "clients". In short, we completely overreact, but that makes us feel useful. It comes naturally actually and it's a nice feeling. Like this one time a guy was being a jerk to a girl so I cussed him out but all he could do was sit there. She really liked me after that.
It wasn't really something I chose to do, it just came out.It makes some of us feel more useful. I get to feel like a superhero without having to put on my cape.
I would fight to protect any girl who was in trouble and actually have this year.
It's built into us. It's what a guy feels he should do. Protect his girl and keep her safe.Goes back to caveman days. "She is my woman, I will defend her and her honor" Society has established that males must provide and protect females. Pretty much says it all. :/
because we want to look after you and have seen how vunrable some girls can be
People tend to be protective of anyone they love, based on my experience, regardless of gender.
Culture. Seriously.
