He prob feels that it is more intimate. My wife never calls me by my nickname, always just the first part of my name. Nobody but her calls me that, it makes it easier to recognize who's talking to me.
It's because he doesn't want you to be just another person in his life. When you call him the nickname it makes you just a part of the crowd.
