Yeah, the guy is bored so he wants to start an interaction to keep his self amused and entertained.
I dont know your situations but the likelihood in general consensus is that guys are bored so they want to be interactive if possible.
Meaning he doesn't like the girl?
If the guy doesn't like the girl he wouldn't bother wasting time on them.
If they do at least tolerate the girl, I can see that wanting to keep the conversation going is a good indicator that he is interested in some way or another.
