My best guess is that he may have been genuinely interested in being friends with you, but then realized that either he was afraid or it hurt him too much and was too immature to have that discussion with you. (Assuming he’s a good guy and his intentions were pure)

Why do you care? You cannot be friends with an ex. It prevents one from moving on and causes problems with future relationships
