Why do guys put no effort into keeping the conversation going?

Maybe they're not interested. Or maybe they think you're uninterested.

Most guys don't want to feel like they're wasting their time with a girl who doesn't seem all that engaged or into them.

If it feels like a forced conversation with a woman then clearly there is no chemistry and then what is the point?

That's an odd generalization and usually a reflection of ones own shortcoming. Have you ever considered the fact that perhaps you're not interesting enough for a guy to want to put effort into a conversation w/ you?
