It's hard for some guys to keep a conversation going because it's hard to always thinks of things on the spot that you might like to talk about. if the conversation has been too long without anything to talk about , they might just give up of talking because they are too embarrassed to talk to you again. Sometimes if the conversation is loosing its grip try to lead the conversation for a bit and it might give him a chance to think of what to talk about.
Just because he's comfortable initiating the conversation doesn't mean he is able to keep it going and evolving. I would say that starting a conversation is easier than keeping it alive. Also he might feel like you aren't meeting him halfway or reciprocating his level of interest.
If he's the only one who ever initiates conversations, he might feel like the interest is one-sided so he's kind of backing off until you show more effort.

That's his communication style, either deal with it or move on. Girls seem expect EVERYONE to feel the same way they do. It doesn't work that way.
How lazy are you? If you are interested in him you should work to keep him interested in you. If you aren't interested why do you care how he acts?
Might be he's bit in a dilemma to continue or not and waits for girls reply and it ends up dead in convo... but boys would always want to talk to girls if they like them... just a sma push required from girls side as well.

Really? In my experience guys carry the whole conversation and girls just answer the guys' questions. At some point it feels like an interrogation. Maybe he feels the same.
