Maybe he just didn’t care that much to bother the cashier? I don’t think that had anything to do with being assertive or not. Maybe a few dollars isn’t that important to him

It's not about being assertive he probably didn't want to look broke /cheap in front of everyone. I'd say more so his pride/ego got in the way.
