This is a delicate issue for many people, not only guys but it applies to both genders.
I personally don't like compliments because usually they are not really meant from the bottom of the heart. They are often given when the one giving a compliment is expecting something in return from the one receiving the compliment.
Compliments are rarely honest. In your case, your boyfriend does not feel comfortable giving compliments in person because he has the feeling that it puts him in an inferior position, in the position of someone that will need to give something in return.
If someone gives a compliment, then it should come naturally and should not be after someone asks for them.
To me, a real compliment is the one that is given on a personal accomplishment rather than on physical attributes.
