He might feel secure knowing you’re there to put in the effort while he doesn’t, in a strange way it’s like he has power in the situation because he knows you are interested in him. You threatening to cut him off is threatening to take away the security he has, so he reacts badly to cope with that.
I’m not excusing his actions though, he sounds very insecure and not at all a good person as he targets your insecurities to bully you. He most likely doesn’t care about you, and if he does then he has a very unhealthy way of showing it.
