Why would my ex's best friend test me as a friend but only when he's with my ex?

In your opinion, why do you think he would ask his friend to do this if he doesn’t want to be with me

Its been about a week and a half but I told him that I would distance myself from him and maybe eventually I would reach out to him if I we wanted to try to be friends

This is the fourth time since he ended things that I’ve tried to pull away for my own protection but he pulls me back by reaching out, sending memes and calling me.
