He asked me "Is it a fake or a real smile?" Why he asked me that?

Last night I posted a picture on instagram with my sister from going out. One guy replied to my story "😍". He followed me a few months ago.
He is the brother of a guy I was with for a couple of years. It ended badly. He now has a girlfriend. I haven't seen him in 6 months.
I send him "🤗". He replied "Is it a fake or a real smile?" I replied that it was honest.
I don' understand what he meant.
What that message meant?

Because your relationship with his brother ended badly, to me what’s most likely goin on is one of two things..

1. He’s on a “fishing expedition” for his brother to find out what’s going on with you.

2. He came to like you over the time you were with his brother and, despite your relationship ending badly with his brother, he’s saw you on Instagram and wants to strike up something with you. (Otherwise, he’d just leave you alone.)

PS: I thought this emoji 🤗 means “hug/hugs”?

Since they were sitting together, it’s likely that the 2 were discussing your Instagram and your ex told his brother to send you a message.

You can often tell thedifference between a genuine smile caused by happiness and a fake smile that is just for a picture. He likely suspected the smoke in the picture was a fake one so he asked you about it. I can't say much else though since you didn't share the picture here

That's a thing guys do, i get it a lot lol. They want to seem like they are all caring and shit, but usually just want to get in your pants. He probably heard you was sad recently or something and wanted to comfort you and gain your trust.
