Why would a guy tell a woman that he doesn't make a lot of money?

I can't decide whether he is hinting he wants nothing serious or seeing if I will be with a guy that doesn't have much.

I recently chatted, in person, with a guy that's been giving off flirty vibes. It was our first personal convo (he works in a department store) and he asked me my relationship status, name and age; in that order. Then he told me he doesn't make much money and can't afford to buy a house. Then we said our goodbyes and he was staring at me as I left. We again waved goodbye from afar. He was so zoned out staring at me he almost didn't wave back. But yeah, weird thing to be so upfront about.

Most girls mostly wants guys to be Financial stable. my guess he’s not Financial stable and he’s letting you know and wants to see how you react to his Financial situation and also see if your gonna to stick around with him or not. Most girls don’t like poor man but I could be wrong.

Well, we exchanged numbers and he just clammed up on me. I mean he willingly gave it to me and even suggested message each other so I don't know why he clammed up. He was all flirty before then he just clicked off. And yes, I don't expect fancy dinners. I don't even like stuck dining environments.

It was longer. We are already acquainted and friendly. I am his customer. I thought he was just being friendly but I realise he's interested in getting to know me.
So after talking abiut an item I plan to purchase, he started talking about ourselves and he mentioned before even asking me my name that he doesn't make much money and can't afford to support a family. I have kids from my past marriage.
