So today I was in front of my school trying to text my mother an I ran out of data, so I asked a classmate nearby if he knew of any convenience store nearby (you can buy data there in my country) and went on with my day, my friend thinks it looks like I was trying to hit on him but I was just asking a question, so I'm confused

Not really. Although in highschool the way girls would usually approach would be by asking for something. Be it help, direction or input. Not a convention I agree with but I see why it is an easy method for limited results.
