Guys, Why is he answering like this?

I broke up with a guy, but I haven’t blocked him as I don’t want to be cruel.

Today he texted and asked me how I am (we haven’t spoken properly in two months) I simply replied that I wished him well.

Then his reply was strange, he told me how that he was doing well and thanked me for enquiring... I never asked how he was. He knows me well, and knows I’m keeping it minimal just to be polite.
Why he do this?

i just wouldn't answer, or if you do answer him like late at night and be like my bad i was busy so he know you ain't interested
