That could mean that he has feelings for you but he hasn´t made them public he doesn´t want to talk about it. It could be the case that he isn´t sure about his feelings so he hasn´t asked you and he wants to wait for asking you out first before making things public.
His friends asking him about his feelings towards you makes him feel trapped so he gets defensive to avoid talking about his feelings when he doesn´t feel right about it.

If his friend showed interest in you he rather gets moody than defensive. But I think it´s possible that he has at least some feelings for you and he hasn´t figured that out so if someone else also shows interest in you that makes him react in a moody way.
