Can a guy ignore the girl he has fallen in love with and why?

Yeah, I know a guy. He's done some bad stuff in the past that he's gotten out of now. But he's got mental health issues from it. He had found a girl who was unlike any other he'd ever been with. He was sex-crazed but with her he didn't even think about sex, just wanted to be with her as much as he could. But he was always anxious what if she'd hate him knowing his past. He didn't even give her a chance. One night they'd talked on the phone, hung up, and he, in a frenzy of panic, texted her that he isn't good enough for her and blocked her number from everything. He vanishes from her life and told me about this event because he was seeing her everywhere (in his mind). He couldn't stop thinking about her suddenly. And this guy I was talking to for months, bonding over things, I even liked him a lot, and he told me he really liked me. But knowing his past, I always knew he'd be gone without a trace one day. And knowing that he still thought about this girl broke my heart. And now he's gone without saying anything. Took a lot in me to recover.

Well that's how one get's out of love. That or heartbreak. Distance and time away will get rid of the feelings.
And why would one do it? Maybe she's not his type he has feelings for someone who realistically has nothing in common to talk about and do things with which will lead to bad overall relationship.
Maybe she's not into him, simple you don't want to love someone and be strung along hurt etc.
Maybe she's not a good person or a player and overall bad company.
Maybe she's with someone else again much to alike the she's not into him.
