Probably because you're only 18, so I assume he is just as young as you are and probably not as bold or mature as you to find the courage to figure out how to speak to women yet.
I think what you did was the right thing, and I would never discourage you from doing it again if it doesn't work out this time. Totally not your fault that this guys can't get over his issues. Some guys at that age just don't have the emotional maturity to find the courage even when its basically dropped in their laps. Trust me some day when he grows up completely he will think back to this incident and kick himself in the ass for being soooooooo stupid!!!
I do at 45 still remember my blown opportunities at 18 years old, because I didn't know how to approach women right or I had naïve and stupid notions in my head on how I thought it was supposed to work. Even after they made it very clear to me that I should.
