He's hurt because he doesn't know his value yet. self-esteem seems low. When you have other dating options, a woman saying "no" doesn't bother you.

The guys who can handle it, have been told "no" hundreds of times and they know there is a "yes" out there somewhere.

You did nothing wrong according to what was presented, so don't change your approach. Guys who value their time, value "no".
