Anonymous(36-45)+1 yI can tell if a girl is giving me a fake compliment. I appreciate her intention but I know it’s not real.
Honestly I rather have her refrain from saying something stupid vs. giving me fake compliments. For example I met up with my ex 3 years ago and she said “you look different” (haven’t seen her 5 years) and it was NOT in a good way. I didn’t say anything to provoke her into saying that. I almost responded with “oh yeah you look different too. You have gained weight! (and really she did)”00 Reply

+1 yIn my experience, yes.
The men I dated (and I say this having left both and now deciding to explore the sapphic side of my sexuality more) were EXTREMELY sensitive.
If it wasn't an outright compliment every time, it was met with defensiveness and justification, then anger and stagnation.
I wouldn't go about it in bad ways, and I wouldn't offer unsolicited advice. In every instance, he would ask me for honest feedback, and insist he wanted honesty. But never liked the honest feedback.
My second partner was better than my first. He accepted negative feedback, but he also never did anything to improve his situation - and would then be angry (sometimes misdirected) that his situation didn't magically improve without him putting in effort.
So, yes, most men prefer a woman stroke their ego. I've found men over 40 much more accepting of their flaws and feedback, and much more capable of not only taking but giving valuable feedback.00 Reply
I know a lot of men will say no when you frame it like this… but in practice, I think just about everyone prefers their ego being fluffed a little over honest criticisms.
I’ve noticed a lot of older guys especially are insecure of their self-worth outside of their accomplishments and titles, and so being too honest about their shortcomings may be more uncomfortable than you planned. This isn’t to say that men are inherently more fragile but men are socialized to believe this the same women are socialized to place a lot value on their physical appearance.
Nonetheless, as a general rule of thumb when giving honest criticism to anyone, unless they explicitly ask you for your honesty, try to be as positive as possible unless you don’t care about hurting their feelings unnecessarily. 👍🏻00 Reply
+1 yI prefer honesty over everything. Even if someone is lying just for the sake of not hurting my feelings, that would just be a disservice to me in the long run. That said, there is a difference between being honest and being a blunt jackass and I think that’s important for people to know

+1 yNo. I would rather have the truth. Either she will show me who she really is inside OR she will tell me something that I might not want to hear but need to know.
then when she actually says something nice I know she means it.
look I’m not saying be nasty about it. Just tell me the truth00 Reply
+1 yWhen I was a lot younger that was what I wanted. I didn’t want to hear the truth if I didn’t like it. Now that I’m older I embrace constructive criticism. If my women tells me I’m messing up somewhere I want to know so I can improve. Even if it’s with sex. If I’m not satisfying her I want to know what I can do to improve and make her feel great. That’s a harsh one for a lot of men to accept

The same goes with me
Anonymous(45 Plus)+1 yNo not at all. I prefer honesty. We as men, at least my generation don’t need that sort of thing the way women do. I’m not going to get bent out of shape if you don’t notice my new haircut, or a new shirt. Those are things that are of little importance to me. Unlike a lot of women who seem to need that sort of attention. A compliment every so often isn’t a bad thing, I just don’t need it if I never really hear it. Those are the least of my concerns.

+1 yNo I don't believe so. At least from the guys I have known most if not all prefer genuine compliments as oppose to stroking their ego by lying myself included. It fosters a relationship of honesty and dependability.

+1 yI don't need anyone stroking my ego
I'm cocky enough and prideful enough as is
The only thing I'm not proud of is my aesthetics for the most part and mentioning that's just going to piss me off probably00 Reply
+1 yNo, if I suspect a woman is doing that to me, then I'm more self conscious. I would rather be able to trust what she says so when I get a compliment, I know she means it

+1 yYou're only hurting your artist friend by telling them their art is amazing when it's shit. They won't strive to get better. Same deal here. Don't be a prick about it and only bring it up if they ask.

The issue is that our ego/self confidence is what keeps many of us going.00 Reply4.6K opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic. Unfortunately that is true I guess. Of course not all men will come in this category but yes there are men who prefer a woman to do this.

00 Reply Lies are always bad. Even if they are meant to make someone feel good because there is no honesty in it. It becomes a waste of time, a useless act devoid of honesty or meaning.

Though I also prefer optimistic people and positive people as opposed to ones who always see the worst in everything.00 Reply - 2.8K opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic.
+1 yno. i think most men prefer to just be told how it is. not sugarcoating shit and not putting some sort of emotional riddle in it.
00 Reply 1.8K opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic. Well, honesty is over rated. Do you really want your boyfriend to tell you if he thinks you are being stupid or you look fatter than before.
