Why do men “howl” “wolf whistle” at stranger women?

I had the weirdest most stressful experience of my life today. I got in the train and almost 30 men (who seemed like friends) sat all around me. Suddenly, they started howling and wolf whistling , basically they started making like ape sounds at me but not directly to my face. I was petrified and i did my best to hide it and to ignore it but the minute the train stopped I ran outside even though it wasn’t even my stop but i just didn’t want to be around them. Why do men even?
