Be a wildfire. Oscar Wilde is gay. The world is as you make of it. Most people don't really unleash themselves. They don't piss on people's faces at a French restaurant. They hold something back.
Wilde was a homo? I hope you're joing
I can't detect if that's sarcasm or ignorance. Wilde was flamboyantly homosexual (not to hold it against him). Shakespeare as well, you know? Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? That was targeted to a young man, not woman.
I need evidence.
I got an English teacher in high school and we studied both Wilde and Shakespeare. Then apparently she was such a lazy teacher that she didn't watch the tape in advance. She just popped it in and we got a heavy dose of how Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde were gay. Then it even seemed to personally offend which I delighted in seeing because she argued for the rest of the course how the VHS tape she showed us was so wrong. It was hilarious!
But maybe sad too because it's like these were her heroes, and maybe she fantasized them as speaking to her -- so beautiful as a middle-aged high school teacher with all of her cats. They can overlook her and see that she understands the brilliance of what they write. But they're gay! They like male bodies way more!
Anyway if so, I'll probably be tossing my Shakeapeare book out and nt taking these individuals serious. Thankfully theyre dead
Are you serious? Wilde had affairs outside of his marriage with young poets. He was tried for homosexuality. That's a big part of his history. We look back on it now and think it's not a big deal. But ti was a huge deal in Wilde's time.
Disgusting
It's also the most relevant context to the quote you posted from Wilde. He couldn't be himself in his time. He was in court. He couldn't be himself.
It makes sense, there should be only one of you
