Why do men like American Psycho?

I read somewhere that “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is like “Scarface” for the college girl crowd.

I know a lot of guys like certain things (and I might or might not agree with each choice of
film), so there will often be a lot of things in common (like movies), just like a lot of women will choose similar movies (for their own similar reasons).

I like horror, which a lot of guy friends don’t even seem to like… lots of comedies, some action… though not as much as a lot of other dudes…

Scarface and The Godfather films tend to be big ones, as well as Fight Club. I didn’t notice that American Psycho is a huge favorite with guy friends - though it’s possible that it’s probably In the top ten or twenty.

But since you asked why it’s popular with guys, here’s my guess:

Bateman is a wealthy investment banker. He’s good looking, rich, powerful, gets women (ok, even if most are prostitutes) and has a hidden “dark” side. Sounds like another popular Bale role…

It’s sort of a satire… a film with a commentary about the costs of conforming and self expression, about issues of “toxic masculinity.”

A lot of guys might also see similarities in that we all have a similar public persona (yeah, even women have their own versions of this) that we keep up with, which many of us kinda hate, but we’re not really allowed to stray too far outside of that norm. Men can relate, especially in the last 20 years…

Most guys may never really want to snort coke or get a hooker or whatever, but there’s maybe a small attraction to a guy who gets away with a lot of stuff (because he can).

It’s a fairly well made film. There’s some dark comedy, some decent dialogue, and comedic bits in the sense of people talking mundane stuff juxtaposed with them doing some morbid stuff. While I’m not a huge fan or anything, I guess I get how some people might like it.

Really, it's mostly about Christian Bale's commitment to playing such a psycho person with such sincerity. The character is OUT OF HIS GOARD, but it's interesting to see how his mind works - it's horrific and interesting at the same time - kind of like wanting to see the aftermath of a horrible car crash. It's terrible, but you can't keep your eyes off it, because it's so outside if your normal experience.
