Why are so many people so arrogant and nasty as a result?

I went to the store today and asked a question during checkout and the associate answered with an attitude and snark. She also looked at me when the process even started with a look in her eyes like she despised me. There are so many nasty hateful people out there. It surprises me the amount of them. She was acting like I was disturbing her, as though if I had not been checking out with her and asking a question, she would be at a high fashion elite photoshoot getting her photo taken by Nigel Barker or something. People are so arrogant and deluded. You work at Zara. You are not above me. Its your job to answer easy simple questions about the merchandise and checkout process. Lower your ego and come back down to earthm if you're too good to answer a customer's question then go back to your high fashion photoshoot session. Oh wait you can't because you're exactly where you're supposed to be.

Also another thing I notice is nasty people will treat me with disdain and act like I am bothering them meanwhile 2 seconds later they will have this pleasant demeanor and respectful tone and facial expressions when talking to those who are nasty and arrogant like they are. Birds of a feather flock together.

If you think a pic of your latte is worth posting because it is your latte and consequently so much better than other peoples lattes, then I would say you have some narcissistic tendencies. When you get say a 1000 likes of your superlative latte then you will feel reinforced that your lattes are far better than other peoples lattes because... well it can only be due to your inherent superiority over those people who buy not so good lattes can't it?

It's not helped that a lot of guys like everything that a girl posts on the off chance it might help them to get off with her. Not likely but then it doesn't cost money - so why not. There is a lot of ego reinforcement going on.

I was interested in this some time ago and indeed there is evidence narcissism is on the rise. The cause/effect is my conjecture only.

With narcissism comes arrogance at being better than others even though you only work at a lowly register job. :) This is better supported scientifically as the types of guys who are abusive to women (you have probably seen this on GAG) have been found to be narcissistic. Girls possibly are more abusive with attitude whilst guys are with name calling.

The other thing I have noticed is narcissists sort of form reinforcement pacts - they like other narcissists stuff. They will mutually virtue signal together. So your birds of a feather observation doesn't surprise me.

I think a lot of people act like they have a stick up their butt these days because of inflation and the state of society as a whole. Background and upbringing play a big factor, too.
