Probably a female friend that helped him though a lot when thiings got dark in his life and she is like a sister. I'd tread lightly and not assume its outright cheating. Some guys like myself often get really close platonically with friends of the other sex. But the relationship isn't sexual or romantic at all its more of a we know one another well enough to be able to just motivate and build one another up if we start slipping. Sort a friendship where we can trust the other to be able to reset our moral compass.
