I think it's because most guys feel they have a chance with the girl who's normal-pretty. It's not out of the realm of possibility that she would notice them. She's still attractive, but not unattainable or intimidating. Also, models are assumed to be shallow/untrustworthy/not girlfriend material, so the more 'realistic' girls are more appealing.
