Why would a guy text “Hi” for the first time, when usually he doesn’t initiate conversations?

I know this isn’t particularly a wise question, but it’s just weird how a guy I used to like (had a crush on, but not anymore) texted me first. I used to text him first every weekday for months and not once did he really text me first. I mean he did ask a question once but that was all… but I didn’t talk to him for a week until I just asked him a question and then later on changed it to “Nevermind” because I figured he wouldn’t respond. I didn’t see when he replied but he did at some point. I didn’t say anything to his reply because he just wrote “Alright” and there was nothing for me to say. Could it be because I didn’t reply back? 2 days passed and then he sent “Hi”… it was weird though. Could another reason be because I didn’t say anything? I know it sounds like i’m exaggerating, but this is a first. He doesn’t send messages first. We may be friends, but it’s usally me talking first…
