Guys, what the hell is wrong with this man?

This guy is being really weird. Basically, we were flirting with each other. But then I found out that he was looking for something casual, I wasn't. We were friends before then, so decided to keep it like that. And yeah, it wasn't a problem at all, we just stopped flirting and everything was fine. But then, I had to go away for a month, returned, and some weird stuff started happening. We went to a competition together that lasted two days. During the first day he started flirting again, randomly kept hugging me from behind (never freaking did that), called me Bella (beautiful in Italian), and was just being quite communicative. Then, we had a dinner after the first day, after which we went out, but he and the other friends decided to go home after the dinner. So before then I met up with him, and he was like, wow, looking amazing today (Again, never said that before). And then after a few phrases was like, hm, and who is your target for today? I casually answered that i don't have anyone specific on my mind, and said that yeah, probably most of the athletes are staying the night only for flings and stuff. So i asked him, why isn't he staying? He jokingly said, that he doesn't like going out, and that everyone worthy is taken? I was like okay, bro, if you say so. Then we went out, and during dinner he was again asking questions, and when i've mentioned that I'm chatting with one of his friends, he was like: What? Since when? What do you guys talk about? And quickly changed topic when i started praising the friend. After that he went home, we went partying. The next day, same stuff. Touchy, flirty, asking for my opinion on everything, saying how he appreciates me. And after that we parted ways, as I moved to other city. What the hell is wrong with him? Why have we decided that we're fine being friends, and now he starts doing all this? I just don't understand the guy. I still view him as a friend at this point, I don't need a fling. But what's up with him?
