There’s no such thing as not going for looks. His eyes appealed to you before asking you on a date. I guess what he means is he isn’t putting looks above personality, like you can be hot but if your personality is garbage he won’t pay mind. Maybe you should ask him though, don’t be afraid to challenge someone’s mindset if what they are saying confuses you.
