It's way more common than you think. He had no reason to think differently, specially if he tried going after women and all ignored him or turned him down. This messes up with guys. A man has to fight for his validation, because people won't compliment or show interest in him out of nothing.

I would guess that he has low self-esteem just like the majority of women on this site. For your entire life no one has shown any interest in you. For him, it's probably hard to believe that you are truly interested in him.

Because guys are raised with the belief it’s their job to conquer. Like girls are raised to be pretty and submissive to men. Guys are raised to believe we are dominant and take over the word. So for him to spend years not gaining a girls interest is a daily reminder he’s not perfect. When you come along and ask him to be a little different or do something different he sees it as again he’s failing
