So today I was playing chess with this guy, I think he is very beautiful/handsome in many ways. Well, during the game he made a great move and I automatically reacted and said “beautiful!”😃, when he looked at me and I said “you’re beautiful too!”…well he seemed surprised but he showed no emotion or reaction to it. I had seen similar reaction before from other guys though. I thought that perhaps he thought it was weird/strange that I used that particular word. So, do you think is strange if a woman calls you beautiful instead of handsome? (In other words, did I f up)🤣

Yeah a bit. Guys are unused to compliments from girls for the most part. When I get told I am looking good I know they mean I am looking less scruffy than normal and are trying to encourage me to be more presentable and less embarrassing.
In the scenario beautiful move made sense whereas handsome move would be technically correct but a bit off. Following it up with you are beautiful too was in keeping.
I don't think he would be offended but merely surprised at you complimenting him. Nonetheless we would prefer a girl to say handsome.
can say for my personal experience if a woman calls me beautiful without knowing me is to scam me, to sell me something or to make fun of me. In my country there’s no possibility a woman tells a man “beautiful” or “handsome” sincerely without knowing him. I know you did it without meaning any harm for him but I can comprehend why he considered it suspicious or at least strange.

😱 I’m just realizing many guys think this way. I guess women do take advantage of the power of their words. Personally, I just thought the guy is beautiful in many aspects.
I believe your honesty and I’m not criticising you, simply there’s a lot of social constructs that make us man think that way. Obviously it depends on the country and the context you live in, but in general it’s easy to be misunderstood for a woman acting like that, despite her being well intentioned like you!
no, well, the actual word is handsome buttttt. the thing is, is, you don't really ever hear women complimenting men
also, don't just say "you're handsome", it's weird. Tell us why, or something, just be like "wow, you going on hot date or something, handsome"
That sort of thing makes us feel good because it makes us feel good about the choices we've mad

Thank you for your opinion, I didn’t really thought of it that way. I just called the guy beautiful because his move was beautiful, his level of intelligence was top, and he looked beautiful and the whole moment was perfection but I didn’t thought he might need an explanation/details.
I'd feel... Uncomfortable... With that. But I'd still appreciate it, if you get my meaning. Also, do you play online? I sometimes play on chess. com Been a while though, and I'm in vacation mode right now because I got a 14 day game I don't want to end with someone else.
I found it funny that noone else here considered the possibility that that man was flirting with you.
Whether or not he thought you were meaning the move (if he made that good a move he did, unless he's as aloof as many men are) he seized the opportunity to give you a compliment.

In the past it has not been the custom for women to call men beautiful. So men are not use to being called beautiful. Keep using the word, we will get use to it. Here is a question for you: How would you react if I called you handsome rather than beautiful?
That was maybe a little much tbh. Being called beautiful as a guy is not common. Most guys have never been called beautiful in their life and it’s kinda a pretty strong word ya know? If I was him I probs wouldn’t know how to react to it but that’s just me maybe other guys think differently
Men rarely, if ever, get complimented. We just don't know how to react to it properly. Just know that he will never forget the time you called him beautiful.
Beautiful would probably make a man flinch XD. Just isn't really an adj that we use for a man XD. He probably just was flustered to be something comparable to you XD.
Umm I don't know I guess. I've never really been called beautiful. However a woman has called my little friend beautiful. But I think she was just being nice.
It's not strange. I had a girlfriend who on multiple occasions would take my face in her hands and stare into my eyes and tell me how beautiful my eyes were. LOL!
