How to know if he is really over his ex?

The guy I am talking to broke up with her about 4 years ago but they are still friends. She was his first everything and I feel like he is truly not over her. I had asked him if he is over her , he told me that he got over her after he got into a rebound relationship but i don't really believe it. I haven't dated anyone before so I don't know if I am another rebound of his. What signs should I see if he is really over her or if he deep down still likes her?

Why do you feel like he isn't? Like is there actual things that make you think this, or just your worry or insecurity? Maybe you just don't like that she's still in the picture? But I'd say you don't have anything to worry about. Why? Because first it's been 4 years. Second, think of HER side of it (and how most women are). Add to this that it's been 4 years, it ended for a reason, and when a relationship is over for most women, it's REALLY over. How many women "go back"? Almost none. My guess is they'll always be something there for him with all these things, but I'm sure it's over after 4 years (and "something there" doesn't mean feelings of wanting her still, just that she's a part of his past that will always been there, but it's definitely over you know?). And if any "signs", they'll be very obvious (but don't "look" for them based on your insecurities, really look at them in reality. They'd be the same "signs" as a woman that's not really over someone, basic human actions). But with anything, communication is key! Talk to him. Find out how he feels, and also discuss YOUR feelings and insecurities with him. Then no assumptions or hurt feelings are made. My guess is you don't like that she's still in the picture as a friend, and maybe that's what really is bothering you? If so, be honest about that and talk to him. You'll probably feel better afterwards.

it's just I have never been in a relationship before and with the ex still in the picture I feel like I am his rebound number 2. But I will definitely bring it up. As for why I am worried about this is after we had our first kiss he said that it wasn't as good as he had hoped it would be but he was still happy so that made me think that he is still not over her.

For how long he was single before? If it was an honest 9 months to a year. He is likely to be really over. If they ever on and off in that period. Most likely not.
