There might be a couple of reasons. But I'm only guessing.
It could have hit too close to home. Maybe he has a close relative that has a problem with alcohol, so it wasn't funny to him.
Maybe he had a run in or bad experience with someone who drank too much.
Or it just wasn't funny to him.
You could ask if your story bothered him, if so then just avoid that subject all together.

Maybe he didn't think it was funny. Maybe he has had alcohol issues, or someone close to him has had those kinds of issues.
The best is to ask him yourself, you won't get an answer unless you do.

Maybe your story took too long to get to the point, maybe it was boring, maybe he wasn't annoyed at all and you are just creating this in your head.
